For
half a century, "burning the bra" is considered an act of protest,
rebellion, a ritual that liberates the feminist spirit of women. Over time it
has managed to take root in western pop culture, but very few know the origin
of this expression of opposition. Saying a name and an exact date is almost
impossible, but it will be said that it all started in the 60's, when those
movements were in the ascendant for the liberation of women and gender
equality.
In that
decade, some of the typical accessories of women became targets of feminist
activism. These activists manifested especially against makeup, fashion magazines
and, curiously, against a very common garment among them: the bra. It was only
when the famous Australian feminist, Germaine Greer, declared that "the
bra was an absurd invention," so that her words resonated with millions of
women around the world, who in one way or another had always been questioned
about the function and true Utility of the bra. This situation was very well
used by the most radical groups.
